Along the shores of Washoe Lake, herds of wild horses gather at the water’s edge. The lake is shallow, and as summer gives way to fall, its waters recede, drawing the wildlife of the surrounding mountains and valleys to this precious gathering place.

Mustangs, mule deer, coyotes, waterfowl, and even mountain lions depend on these waters. Smaller creatures make their way cautiously along winding paths through sturdy willows and marsh grasses. Hooves and paws stir the shallows. Some come to drink, others to rest, always watchful. So many lives connected by one place.

When I first saw this extraordinary Chameleon variscite, I saw a watering hole. The soft, translucent green of shallow water, the dark earth beneath, and the intricate veins of stone that reminded me of trails worn into the landscape by countless passing animals.

I knew I wanted this stone. I claimed it directly from the lapidary artists who own the Nevada mine from which it came. There is something especially meaningful about knowing the hands that brought a stone from the earth and shaped it before it reached mine.

I set it simply in sterling silver, allowing the landscape within the stone to tell its own story.

Watering Hole is a reminder of the places that sustain us. The familiar paths we follow, the wild lives that cross our own, and the quiet necessity of finding our way back to water.

Perhaps it will remind you of a place you know. A place you return to, where the land feels familiar and you feel right at home.
